A late-night celebration near Indiana University turned violent after a mass shooting left at least nine people injured, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred shortly before 12.30am on Sunday (April 26) near Kirkwood Avenue, where crowds had gathered following the university’s annual “Little 500” cycling race celebration. Police from the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) responded after reports of gunfire in the area.

Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple victims with injuries. Authorities confirmed that nine individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Five were transported by ambulance, while others were brought in police vehicles and private transport, including one person taken from a nearby petrol station.
Police said it was not immediately clear how many victims sustained direct gunshot wounds or whether some injuries were caused by bullet fragments or the chaotic crowd situation during the incident.
In an emergency alert issued to students, Indiana University warned residents to take shelter, lock doors, and avoid the affected area as officers secured the scene. Several law enforcement agencies, including state police and county sheriff’s deputies, assisted in the response.
Witnesses described the area as crowded with celebrants before the situation escalated following a reported altercation between individuals. One witness claimed the confrontation quickly turned violent when shots were fired, prompting people to flee in panic.
As of now, no suspect has been arrested and investigations are ongoing. Police have yet to determine the motive behind the shooting, while forensic teams continue to gather evidence from the scene.
The “Little 500” is a major annual student cycling event held at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, attracting large crowds of students and visitors each year.
