The parents of a 19-day-old baby have come forward after alleging that their newborn suffered a fractured arm while under the care of a confinement centre in Kuching, saying they hope their experience will raise awareness and prevent similar incidents.
According to the parents, they were contacted by staff at the centre at about 1am on August 4, who informed them that their baby’s left arm appeared swollen and advised them to seek immediate medical attention.
An X-ray examination later confirmed that the infant had sustained a fracture to his left arm.
Following the diagnosis, the parents requested that the confinement centre review its CCTV recordings to determine whether their baby had been involved in an accident. They said they were informed that no fall had occurred.
The family subsequently lodged a police report, after which the relevant authorities reviewed the CCTV footage.
According to the parents, the footage appeared to show their newborn being handled in a manner they considered rough and inappropriate, including repeated movements involving the baby’s left arm while his diaper was being changed.
The parents said they were deeply distressed by what they saw but acknowledged that the exact cause and timing of the fracture should be determined through ongoing medical and police investigations.
They also claimed that, prior to the incident, they had on several occasions noticed their baby’s blanket covering his face for prolonged periods during the night without intervention from staff, raising concerns about the infant’s safety.
The family said they had entrusted their newborn to the centre believing he would receive safe and professional care, but instead their baby suffered a fractured arm while under its supervision.
They stressed that making the matter public was not intended to sensationalise the incident, but to seek accountability, transparency and a thorough investigation while helping prevent similar cases involving other families.
The parents have called on the relevant authorities to conduct a full and impartial investigation and determine responsibility based on the evidence, adding that their priority remains their baby’s recovery.
