A 64-year-old woman has been arrested by police in Kediri, Indonesia, after being suspected of abusing her grandchild, resulting in the child’s death in an incident that took place on April 15.
According to authorities, the incident is believed to have occurred after the suspect became angered by the child’s behaviour, particularly for refusing to follow instructions to eat and go to sleep. The case has since drawn serious attention to issues surrounding child welfare within domestic settings.
Head of the Kediri City Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Achmad Elyasarif Martadinata, said investigations revealed elements of physical violence inflicted on the victim prior to the discovery. The four-year-old child was found unconscious at the family residence.
The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene, prompting further investigations by the authorities. The tragic outcome underscores the severity of domestic abuse cases involving vulnerable individuals.
The suspect was detained on April 17 after police gathered statements from several witnesses and obtained sufficient supporting evidence.
Authorities confirmed that the case is being investigated under Indonesia’s child protection and domestic violence laws. If convicted, the suspect could face a prison sentence of up to 15 years. Investigations are still ongoing.
