Police To Use Saliva Tests At Roadblocks To Detect Drugged Drivers

Date:

Police are set to deploy saliva drug test kits at roadblocks to detect drivers and road users suspected of consuming synthetic drug liquids known as “Piu Piu” and “Magic Mushroom”.

The move comes amid concerns over road accidents believed to be linked to motorists under the influence of synthetic drugs mixed into electronic cigarettes or vape devices.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said it is particularly worrying as some drivers may be unknowingly affected after inhaling such substances through vape devices.

He explained that “Piu Piu” and “Magic Mushroom” are not actual drug names, but commercial street terms used to market synthetic liquid drugs.

He added that there have been cases in Malaysia where road accidents were believed to be caused by drivers who had consumed these substances.

Hussein also warned that the drugs are easily accessible, either through online platforms, entertainment venues, or local distribution networks, and can cause users to lose judgement and become disoriented.

He revealed that usage has also been detected among secondary school students.

As of June 10, authorities recorded 168 cases involving 267 arrests related to synthetic liquid drug abuse, a significant increase compared to 108 cases with 138 arrests last year.

He said police do not rule out a rise in drug-related road accidents if the issue is not urgently addressed.

Hussein also urged the government to consider banning vape use to help curb the spread of synthetic drugs and strengthen enforcement efforts.

He added that police are working with the Health Ministry and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and are seeking funding approval to implement saliva testing kits at roadblocks by the end of the year.
