TUDM Strengthens Radar And Surveillance Capabilities Nationwide

Date:

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is intensifying efforts to strengthen national air defence and surveillance systems, while also enhancing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities alongside the development of future fighter pilots.

Air Force Chief General Tan Sri Muhamad Norazlan Aris said the first focus area involves upgrading the country’s air defence and monitoring network through the development of radar systems in Bintulu, Sarawak; Bukit Peteri in Terengganu; and Bukit Lunchu in Johor.

He said this includes airborne surveillance radar at Pulau Layang-Layang, which is crucial in improving early detection capabilities and closing existing air surveillance gaps, particularly in strategic areas.

The RMAF marked its 68th anniversary with a parade at the Subang Air Base themed “Air Power, National Shield”, attended by senior military leadership including Deputy Air Force Chief Lieutenant General Datuk Nur Hafis Abdul Karim and former air force chiefs.

Muhamad Norazlan said the second key priority is strengthening Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities through the operation of the ANKA-S Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and preparations for the Maritime Patrol Aircraft P-72M.

He added that these assets will significantly enhance the force’s ability in surveillance, intelligence gathering and monitoring of national areas of interest.

The third focus, he said, is the development of future fighter pilots through the Fighter Lead-In Trainer and Light Combat Aircraft (FLIT-LCA) programme.

He said the acquisition of the FA-50M aircraft will strengthen the training ecosystem and prepare next-generation fighter pilots with exposure to advanced technology, avionics and modern combat operations.

Muhamad Norazlan stressed that these initiatives are essential to producing competent and confident pilots ready for future operational demands.

He also highlighted continued efforts to enhance logistics support and maintenance systems, as well as strategic collaboration with the local defence industry to reduce external dependency and strengthen national defence capabilities.

He said RMAF remains committed to enhancing readiness and capability development under the Air Force Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55), ensuring the force remains relevant against evolving threats and technological advancements.
