Former Israeli PMs Join Forces To Challenge Netanyahu In New Party Move

Date:

Two former Israeli prime ministers have united in a political move aimed at unseating current leader Benjamin Netanyahu, signalling a potential shake-up ahead of the country’s next general election.

Right-wing politician Naftali Bennett and centrist leader Yair Lapid announced they will merge their respective parties to form a new political entity named “Together”, positioning it as an alternative to the current administration.

“We stand here together for the future of our children. The State of Israel must change direction,” Lapid said during a joint press conference with Bennett, underscoring a shared vision despite their differing political backgrounds.

Netanyahu, the longest-serving prime minister in Israel’s history, returned to power following the November 2022 elections and subsequently formed what is widely described as the most right-leaning government in the country’s history. Political observers note that the latest alliance reflects growing momentum among opposition figures seeking to consolidate support.

Since his return, Netanyahu has overseen major regional conflicts, including the war in Gaza, which has reportedly resulted in more than 72,500 Palestinian deaths, as well as military actions against Hezbollah that led to incursions into southern Lebanon and escalating tensions involving Iran, which have impacted the national economy.

Recent opinion polls suggest Netanyahu’s political standing is weakening, with projections indicating he could face defeat in the next election, expected to be held before the end of October.
